Alabama Shakes. Keep this bands name on the tip of your tongue when recommending fresh, soulful, new music to friends. When I heard their single ‘You Ain’t Alone’ I was instantly shot back to the days of Motown and Otis Redding. Upon further listening, I sensed a bit of Janis Joplin in lead vocalist Brittany Howard’s hauntingly good voice.
The band originated from Athens, Alabama where Brittany approached fellow guitar player Zac Cockrell, who then approached drummer Steve Johnson, who was working at the local music store. Rounded out by guitarist Heath Fogg, who was originally in another band. Oddly enough, Alabama Shakes or ‘The Shakes’ as they were known back then, opened up for Fogg’s former band.
Alabama Shakes began writing music together; covering all types of genres from soul to rock ‘n’ roll. A few years/jam sessions later the quartet brilliantly gifted us with their debut album on April 10th, 2012 entitled ‘Boys and Girls’.
The band is currently on tour all over the globe and will be doing a couple of opening shows for fellow Shakes admirer, Jack White (of the White Stripes) starting May 15th, 2012.
If you haven’t yet listened to this band, I suggest you do it. If not, at least humour me and click on this link to become instantly mind blown. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HxNtWEIKhQ
