Youth Lagoon. If you have not heard this name before, remember this moment as the beginning of something magical – the moment you came across Youth Lagoon. The first time I heard the harmonious sounds of Trevor Powers’ venture Youth Lagoon, I was instantly hooked. At first his music seems very dreamy and fluffy, but hidden in the depths of the lyrics lies the part of Powers that makes Youth Lagoon so vast. His voice is not only haunting but also beautifully melodic. The unique reverb on his vocals is used, in my opinion, as the most prominent instrument of the album. The fullness of added synths, ambient noises, guitars and drum machines leave fans doubtful to hear the barely 20 year old recorded this album in his bedroom, kitchen and garage.
“For my whole life I’ve dealt with extreme anxiety.” Says Powers. ”Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird, bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I’m literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it.” There is no description better than that to help explain the name behind his debut album released on Fat Possum Records in September 2011 called The Year of Hibernation. “I don’t think I could ever write a completely happy album. It’s not that I’m not a happy person,” Powers says, “but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.”
This 22 year old has gone through a lot since his debut release – he dropped out of high school, quit his job and began touring after the instant recognition he began to receive. He landed spot 21 of Spin’s 50 Best Albums of 2011, was awarded Best New Album by Pitchfork Media and his songs and videos have been popping up on many indie blog websites. Purchase his album and make an effort to see him on his current tour. You will not regret it.
